Cold winter weather is quickly approaching. The winter blues don’t have to keep you from staying active and healthy! No need for expensive equipment or a gym membership to keep your body moving. These five cold-weather workouts are fun, easy, and perfect for bodies of all ages!
Walk the Mall
Ok, ok, I know! But don’t knock it until you try it. This ain’t your grandma’s workout, sisters! Mall walking is gaining popularity among ladies of all ages. For a good reason! The mall provides a free “track” that allows you to walk miles without the membership. So, tie up your tennies, grab your girlfriends and get talkin’ while you are mall walkin’!
Snowshoeing
This is my new favorite cold-weather activity! If you love walking for exercise as I do, you’ll love snowshoeing. Unexpectedly challenging, snowshoes give you a great workout. If you’re not quite prepared to commit to buying snowshoes, most areas also rent them for the season. Something I love most about snowshoeing is that it’s very family-friendly. Take your kids, take your dog, get everyone out in the fresh winter air to burn up some energy and calories.
Rebounding
If you’re not familiar with rebounding, you may jump (ahem, pun intended) on the Bounding Bus! Rebounding is a type of aerobic exercise that is performed while jumping on a mini-trampoline. Do not underestimate this workout! I couldn’t believe how it worked the muscles in my legs and increased endurance. Rebounding has gained popularity for more than just the calorie burn. Studies show that it can also strengthen your bones and benefit your endocrine system (personal benefit, it’s also really, really fun!).
Stairs
Sometimes the most obvious solutions are right in front of you. There’s no need for a gym membership or fancy machine to keep active during the cold winter months. If you have stairs in your home, you have all you need for a great workout. Get creative! Try running them, then stepping up two at a time, cross-legged, and even backward to work every angle of the legs and get your heart pumping!
Dance
Total transparency here, I never dance in front of people. I watch admiringly from a distance as people shake it with confidence in Zumba. If I am dancing at home, though, oh yeah! There are nearly endless options to help you get your groove on this winter. Streaming videos, iPhone apps, even live Facebook groups are available to provide fun and effective dance workouts.
