Years ago I learned about SOAP journaling, and I have loved it ever since! SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Here is a SOAP devotional that the Lord gave me years ago when I read Romans 12:2. I pray it blesses you and transforms the way you think about food, your body, and your identity!
Scripture:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2Observation:
How often do we find ourselves consumed with thoughts about food, our bodies, or our worth? Thoughts swirl: “I shouldn’t have eaten that… I’ll never change… I’m not good enough.” These thoughts feel so real that we often accept them without question. But God never intended for us to live in bondage to lies. He calls us to freedom through His truth.
Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) Freedom begins not by trying harder to silence negative thoughts, but by replacing them with the unchanging truth of God’s Word.
The world tells us our worth is based on our appearance, our performance, or our self-control. But God says:
- “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
- “You are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” (Ephesians 2:10)
- “You are chosen, holy, and dearly loved.” (Colossians 3:12)
When we choose to believe these truths, even when our feelings disagree, transformation begins. Like adding clear water to a cup of muddy water, each truth from God’s Word begins to wash away lies that have settled in our minds for years.
Freedom is not the absence of struggle but the presence of truth. Every time you choose to align your thoughts with God’s Word, you are taking back ground that the enemy tried to steal. Stand firm today, knowing that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).
Application:
- What thoughts about food or your body have been dominating your mind lately?
- Which truths from God’s Word above speak directly to these lies?
- How would your day be different if you walked in the freedom of these truths today?
Choose one truth verse today to write on a note card and carry with you. Whenever a negative thought arises, speak this truth out loud. Action Step: Before each meal today, pause and thank God for His provision and declare, “My worth is not in what I eat, but in who You say I am.”
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I have believed lies about my worth and identity. I have allowed thoughts about food and my body to consume my mind and steal my peace. Today, I choose to renew my mind with Your truth. Remind me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, that I am Your masterpiece, and that I am chosen and loved. Help me to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Thank You that true freedom is found not in my striving but in resting in who You say I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.
