Summer can be busy; So how do we stay active and healthy with all of the gatherings, activities, and everything in between? Simple! By making our health a priority even in the midst of our changing schedules. Here are some simple tips to keeping our food choices on track this summer!
1. Pitch the Processed Stuff.
This is probably the best piece of advice because if you don’t have processed foods in the house and you only have clean options, it makes it easier to choose healthy options. This all starts at the food store so make sure you are only buying or ordering clean options. This also works for kid’s snacks. If my kids don’t have processed snacks in the house they are more likely to snack on fruits, vegetables or peanut butter on whole grain sandwiches.
2. Make it Easy.
When creating snack options or meals don’t over complicate it by adding a ton of ingredients or making elaborate instagram worthy meals and snacks. Choose options like Almond butter and celery or apples; Air popped popcorn, hummus and wheat pita/cucumbers, one-pot meals, and more. When shopping consider buying the pre-chopped vegetables or salads – Trader Joes and most local grocery stores have tons of options in the fresh vegetable section of the store.
3. Plan Ahead.
Healthy eating on the go requires some planning. When making your meals for the weeks consider preparing in batches. Staying consistent in the type of meals you eat can save you time and money. For example, I enjoy picking two types of breakfast (egg muffins w/mixed veggies and clean eating smoothie) and this way I can prepare enough for the week and save time in the morning, which most of us need!
4. Freezer Power.
Most of the meals that can be prepped in advance can also be frozen. This is great when batch cooking because it can be prepared all at once and then just heated up on the mornings or days you need a meal. Honestly, most of us will have days where we need to eat out while on the go or at work. Just remember to choose options that will help sustain your energy provide you nutrients and support your health goals. There are lots of options out there for you to stay successful even when you need a convenient option when eating out.
