When the mind decides, everything shifts!
Recently, I watched my daughter slip into some patterns that were leaving her feeling awful. Late nights, junk food, sugar by the handful, you name it. Her skin showed it, her focus was scattered, she was getting sick nonstop, and she just didn’t feel healthy. As a mom, it was hard to watch, especially knowing she’s grown up seeing me model healthier patterns her entire life.
Thankfully, we had a heart-to-heart. She had been asking about certain medications to help her feel better, but I asked her to give me six solid weeks first. Six weeks of truly committing to some of the habits she’s seen her whole life. I asked her to pray that God would give her a hunger for good food, regular rest, and real nourishment. I promised her that if she didn’t feel any different after those six weeks, I’d honor her request.
I’ll be honest, the days leading up to that conversation, she couldn’t even look at a plate of veggies without rolling her eyes. Whole foods weren’t exciting (they were a chore, insert teenager slang for “Gross, Mom!”). But something shifted the moment she decided. It was like watching a light switch flip. Suddenly, she was asking questions, reading labels, and actually getting excited about foods that fueled her body.
And it wasn’t that the food had changed. It was her mindset.
That’s what struck me so deeply was that her body started following where her mind was leading. She chose to lean in, to try what she had resisted before, and the transformation started almost instantly.
I think about how Scripture reminds us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). We often want our circumstances or our health to change first, but the real shift begins when our thoughts surrender. When our mindset aligns with truth, discipline, and faith, everything else follows.
Her story was a fresh reminder for me, too. No matter how long you’ve been on the journey, it’s so good to remember that doing the hard things in our health journey isn’t just about willpower or rules. It starts in the mind. Once the decision is made, the steps become possible and sometimes even joyful. Mindset makes all the difference!
