Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including His people, his own special possession. The Lord of Heavens Armies is his name. Jeremiah 10:15-16
Is your weight an Idol? I’ve had many times in my life when I’ve had to pause and ask myself this question.
Most of us think of idols as wood statues that are worshiped as false Gods, when in reality, an idol is anything that becomes an object of worship in our hearts. Idols can take place in the form of our image, wealth, success, relationships, and even our family.
The enemy is always after our hearts and our worship, which is why He is constantly bringing vices in the form of idols, so we will be tempted to look away from the only thing that will ever satisfy our hearts, and give our affections to another.
So how do we know when our body, weight, or image has become an idol in our lives? I have found when I start to hold too tight to how I look, (or how others perceive my body), rather than surrendering my body and focusing on what God says about me, I can very easily fall into the trap of worship of self.
When we hold too tightly to anything, and it turns from bringing glory to God to glory to self, we risk falling into a very dangerous trap of idolatry.
Specifically when it comes to caring for our bodies, I have when I do so from a heart of worship, (meaning I nourish and move my body as a means to honor God), my heart will naturally fall into a state of balance.
Perhaps you are reading this, and you don't feel that your body image or weight is an idol in your heart, but maybe you can identify with holding too tight to something. Whatever area you feel is a temptation to build an altar of worship in your life, ask God to show you your hearts motives to to help you keep those areas in check. God is very clear in His Word about the trap and downfall that idolatry brings, because we were never meant to worship anything other than Him.
Keeping our hearts free from idols comes when we make ourselves a living sacrifice, laying down our own desires daily in exchange for His. He deserves to be the King of our hearts, and by giving our hearts affections to Him, we will live in a state of worship to Him alone.
God wants to be the one to make us whole– and when we live to worship Him, our hearts become whole, and truly satisfied.
