James 1:23-24 compares the Word of God to a mirror, saying that those who listen to the Word but don’t act on it are like people who look at themselves in a mirror and then forget what they look like.
If I’m getting ready for a photo shoot or cooking show, I take more time getting ready in front of the mirror. I pay special attention to stray eyebrows that need to be tweezed, and make up that needs to be blended. This prolonged look in the mirror reveals much more than when I am quickly throwing my hair up for the day!
This scripture has got me thinking about where I spend my time, and what I am gazing at. I know if I glance quickly at the Word, I won’t see the things God wants to reveal to my heart, nor will I be able to act on them. I want my life to reflect Jesus, but in order to do so, James tells us we need to gaze into the Word of God, and then go out and act on it if we want to know what we look like, and reflect His nature.
If I spend my time looking at other things, or if I read the word and don’t act on what I know to do, it will be as though I’ve never looked at at my reflection. Think of how scary that would be! We would all look a little foolish if we never fixed our hair at the least!
In the world we live in today, with too many distractions to count, I wonder how many of us are walking around missing what God is trying to show us. If we want to know who we are, and what is on the inside of us, we must make a priority for Gods word. Once we’ve received a revelation, instruction, or guidance, we need to act on what we see. It should be our goal to look into the mirror and walk away changed.
This my friends is how we stand out, reflecting Gods marvelous glory to the world around us. The world needs to see Him now more than ever. Something to think about… and do! 🌎🤍🪞
