When it comes to healthy eating, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Things can get especially tricky when we’re deluged with information that isn’t true. Today, we’re dispelling five common lies people believe about eating healthy. Have you believed any of them?
Eating healthy tastes bad and is boring!
Celery, and carrots, and dry rice cakes, oh my! If that’s the vision “healthy eating” conjures up for you, you’re not alone! Many people believe that eating healthy means only eating raw veggies for a snack, and grilled chicken with a side of broccoli for dinner. What a snoozefest! No wonder so many people are turned of by the idea of eating better! The good news is, that style of eating is a diet – plain and simple – and diets don’t work! I mean who wants to eat like that for the rest of their lives? This lie is one of the primary reasons Dashing Dish exists. We’re out to teach people that healthy eating can be tasty, satisfying, and fun! If you’re new to healthy eating, learning how to incorporate healthier options into your eating habits is important. We recommend that you start here.

There’s a “right,” one-size-fits-all way to eat
This could literally not be further from the truth. God knit you together. He masterfully and uniquely created everything about you. To imagine that God strayed from that and made an identical one-size-fits-all way of eating sounds kind of crazy, but so many of us are deceived into believing it. The truth is, the “right” way of eating is the one that leaves you feeling great physically, free mentally and spiritually, and is sustainable for the rest of your life. There are certainly basic guidelines that can be helpful for most people, but when it comes to long-term healthy eating, there’s a plan made just for you. Try asking God to help lead you to your best personal plan. He has one for you! Once you have it, trust it, and decide that you’ll no longer be tempted to constantly look to left or to the right for the next “best” thing.
It’s too time-consuming
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, “I want to eat healthier, but I’m just too busy and don’t have time.” This always makes me chuckle a little to be honest. Food takes time to cook, but poor healthy food somehow gets a bad rap for being slow and time-consuming. Time is time and a meal packed with nutrition can be made in the same amount of it that overly processed, fat-laden, chemically creepy food takes. This lie simply requires a mind shift and a little bit of know-how to put to rest. One of the most important keys to success to saving is learning how to successfully meal prep. When healthy options are ready to go, you’ll be amazed at just how easy it becomes to live a long-term healthy lifestyle. If this lie has been holding you back, you owe it to yourself to start learning the secrets to successful meal planning and prep. These articles will get you started.

It’s too expensive
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I believed this one myself for a long time. I believed that truly eating well was reserved for gals at Whole Foods who climbed out of Range Rovers and shopped in cute Lululemon outfits while stocking their cart with $15 cartons of pre-cut mango slices and pomegranate juice. I’m not exactly sure where that lie came from, but it was a doozy and couldn’t have been more incorrect. The truth is, eating healthy food is manageable on almost any budget. Sure, it may require a bit more planning, but it is doable. Some of the most helpful things I’ve found to make healthy eating less expensive is to buy in bulk and freeze portions, buy seasonally, use healthy grains as a base for bigger appetites, and meal plan to buy only what’s really needed. We talk more about eating well on a budget here.
It only about food
Food is important, there are no two ways about it. If you want to thrive and feel your very best, it begins with proper nutrition. However, many people believe that eating well is enough. The truth is, moving your body in healthy ways is the perfect partner to good nutrition and key to long-term overall good health. Finding a form of movement that you love and works well for your body is so important. If exercise is new to you, you can pray and ask God what form of movement will bless your body. Like the right form of eating for your body, God will help lead you to a form of movement that will help free your mind, strengthen your body, and refresh your soul. Not sure where to start?
