We all know sugar is not the best thing for our bodies, but artificial sweeteners aren't good for our health either. So what is a good option that won't spike your blood sugar, or add unnecessary chemicals to your diet? There are a couple of great options that can be found at most grocery stores!
Stevia: Stevia is a naturally sweet herb and can be grown yourself right along your basil and parsley plants. It contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives or flavors. It’s zero-calorie, non-glycemic and safe for those living with diabetes, since it has no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels. It can be found in liquid and powdered form; and is used in smaller quantities than sugar because of the level of sweetness. If you think it is too bitter- try different brands, some has less of an aftertaste than others! (I buy mine at grocery store or Amazon).
Monk Fruit: Monk fruit is 100-250 times sweeter than sugar, so a little goes a long way. It contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives or flavors. It’s zero-calorie, non-glycemic and safe for those living with diabetes, since it has no effect on blood glucose or insulin levelsThis sweetener provides the same level of sweetness as sugar in much smaller quantities. Monk fruit extract and concentrates provide no calories and can be found in powdered form, used in smaller quantities than sugar because of the level of sweetness. (I buy mine at Costco or Amazon).
Swerve: Swerve is made from ingredients found in select fruits and starchy root vegetables, and contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives or flavors. It’s zero-calorie, non-glycemic and safe for those living with diabetes, since it has no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels. Swerve is a a great sugar replacement in recipes because it measures just like sugar; And it's also the only sugar replacement that caramelizes just like sugar. (I buy mine on Amazon).
Maple Syrup, Honey and Agave Nectar: All three are natural sweeteners that come in liquid form, which can make it more difficult to use in baking. (I buy mine at grocery store).
Coconut Sugar: Coconut sugar is said to be less processed than white table sugar, and contains vitamins and minerals, which makes it more nutritionally dense than white sugar. Coconut sugar has the same amount of calories and sugar per gram as white sugar, so it should be used in moderation. (I buy mine at grocery store).
