New Year's resolutions abound. Chances are, you know someone with lofty aspirations to write on their clean slate this year. Now, don't get me wrong. It is not my intention to dismiss resolutions. We are even told in the Bible that goals and prudent planning are essential to success. But when the Ides of March rolls around, most people's well-intentioned resolutions often become mere suggestions. There are many reasons resolutions fail (a whole article in itself), but one of the main reasons is that they are often associated with loss and discomfort. Instead, finding enjoyable ways to form new habits can be something you look forward to!
Here some resolutions that you may not have considered, that you can, and actually want to stick with:
Eat for enjoyment.
My article How to Make Food a Gift for Yourself discusses this topic in depth. Food is often discussed in terms of its nutritional value, fueling ability, deprivation, restraint, and willpower. This is an issue that is incredibly relevant and under-explored. Often, we don't honor God for the lavish, creative gifts he has given us in the form of food. This year, you may reframe your view and allow yourself to enjoy food more freely. Allow yourself to enjoy it thoroughly, deeply, and freely.
Make memories with Jesus.
My pastor challenged us this year to create memories with Jesus. It took me a couple of days to think about that and let it sink in. I love the idea, though. We spend so much time talking and reminiscing about memories with our loved ones. How beautiful to consider building memories with our Lord, our friend. I imagine playful moments when He laughs at something we both find funny. Or, with intention, I invite Him on experiences together. This idea feels deeply relational and beautiful. How might it look in your life?
Choose differently.
In November, my husband and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary. Reflecting on our two decades together, we realized that "choosing" is a powerful act. Marriage is choosing one another over and over again, despite hardships. When things got complicated, we had the choice not to give up. We could have found a fresh new romance somewhere else, but instead chose to find contentment in a more profound love for each other. A few days later, my son and I had a similar conversation about food. He is a growing athlete, learning the importance of fueling his body right. His words led to a fascinating discussion about how semantics are crucial to victory. Instead of looking at these things as restrictions or things he "can't have," he can remember that he doesn't choose them because they don't support his goals.
All of us make hundreds of choices every day. We decide whether to get up early or sleep. We choose our attitudes. We choose what we invest our time in. And we determine what we eat and how we exercise. The journey of your health is a choice. You will get bombarded with restrictive diet, extreme exercise, and enticing weight loss options in the coming weeks. When you empower yourself and realize that nothing is genuinely off-limits, it's simply something you don't choose because it doesn't help you achieve your goals, leaves you feeling satisfied, or is of no importance to you, you find new resolve. Pray and ask God to give you His vision for your next step and follow Him one decision and choice at a time.
Find a physical activity to do solely for enjoyment.
How often do you move your body just for the sheer enjoyment of it? That's right, no Fitbit, no tracking calories, steps, or heart rate -- just joy. Enjoying your body's ability to move without being distracted by the "exercising" aspect profoundly rewards you. When I hike and gaze at the wonders of nature, something comes alive in me. You might close your eyes and lose yourself in the rhythm of a dance, utterly unaware of others around you. Perhaps you would like to learn hula-hooping or martial arts. No matter what you do this year, make sure to find a way to move your body simply to celebrate its capabilities.
