I will never forget the first time I asked God to speak to me in His word. I was seeking direction after years of eating disorders at the age of 18. I opened my Bible to Roman’s 12:2, and it spoke directly to my heart!
The bible tells us in Romans 12:2-3 that we have the ability to discern God’s perfect will in every area of our lives. It says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Simply put, renewing your mind is the process of exchanging the lies for the truth. It’s the exchange of your natural way of thinking for God’s way of thinking. This transformation takes place when we read, understand, and apply God’s word.
What I love about the bible is that it is Gods spoken word written directly to us. If we want to know His thoughts on a matter, we can find it in the Bible. If we are having a hard time distinguishing a truth from a lie, reading His word is like turning the light on in a dark room, which allows you to see things for what they really are.
Some practical ways we can renew our minds is by studying the word of God, meditating on the word, and praying the word of God.
We can do this in many ways, but the most important is to spend quite time reading the Bible, and asking the Holy Spirit to give us understanding. We can use a study bible to help us learn, as well as pray scriptures, which we know is God’s will for our lives.
We can continue to study the word all throughout the day, which we have endless resource to do so. With all of the podcasts, sermons, and audio bibles available at our finger tips, there is really no excuse not to spend time in the Word of God! We can also meditate on God’s word by keeping it before our eyes. Personally, I like to do this by writing scriptures out on a notecards.
The more time we spend renewing our mind to what God says, the more we will be transformed by His truth! This keeps our minds focused on those things that are pure, just, right, holy, and of a good report, and aligns our hearts with God’s perfect will for our lives!
