In a recent article, I shared with you my new found love for Walmart shopping thanks to online ordering and curbside pick-up. For years I avoided shopping at Walmart. I avoided it for a couple of reasons; I did not enjoy the experience of the in-store shopping. I also held a preconceived belief that they only sold "junk" or low-quality food choices. Though I don't do all of my shopping at Walmart and do supplement my shopping with quite a few health food store options, I specifically chose to share my recent Walmart round-up because shopping there does help provide a budget-friendly way to include more healthy food into your diet. Here at Dashing Dish, we want everyone to feel empowered to fuel their bodies with healthy food. For some, shopping at specialty and health food stores goes beyond the budget. Walmart has done a great job of incorporating good, clean, organic options into their store. For those of you who desire to fill your home with healthier options, at the most affordable prices, Walmart may be just be your newfound favorite.
Protein Power!
We go through a lot of protein around here. I incorporate a lot of protein into my own diet and with kids and a hungry husband, I really need to keep my freezer well stocked with plenty of protein for easy prep. Meat is one grocery item though that can really add up fast when it comes to cost. Walmart now offers plenty of good, organic protein options at very competitive prices. I like to purchase a full weeks worth of chicken, turkey and ground beef so I always have basic protein staples on hand for meal prep.
Nuts about healthy fats!
Something else I always make sure to have on hand are good sources of healthy fat like seeds and nuts. With back-to-school season in full swing, we also go through a lot of nut butters for sandwiches and snacks. My daughter is peanut-free so I really appreciate the alternatives available at Walmart. They offer sunflower butter, almond butter, and cashew butter that I love! (not pictured)
Frozen Fruit is Fun!
Frozen fruit is the snack of choice for my kids. Instead of popsicles, I buy frozen fruit to enjoy on warm days and they love it. I really appreciate the great selection of organic frozen fruit options available at Walmart. Here's one budget friendly tip to enjoy more for less. I don't tend to spend the extra money for organic fruits that have a rind or skin, like melon, mango, or pineapple. Spend the extra money instead on things like berries and cherries.
Crazy for veggies!
Veggies are by far the staple we go through the fastest. I try to buy enough produce to last an entire week but we go through it so fast, I sometimes need to add an extra trip just for veggies! I've been thrilled to discover the variety of organic produce available at Walmart. With really competitive prices it makes loading up on tons of fresh produce much more manageable.
Frozen veggies go further!
One great money saving tip is to enjoy frozen veggies all year long. Sometimes it's difficult for people to use fresh produce before it begins to go bad. Obviously wasted food is the opposite of the money saving strategies you're working toward. One great way to incorporate more veggies into your diet without worry over waste is to enjoy the wide variety of frozen options available. I love the veggies spirals. The ways you can enjoy them are almost endless. They're a quick, delicious way to enjoy your vegetables.
It's snack time!
If you have kids like I do, you may feel like your day is an endless series of snack requests. My kids are always looking for a quick snack and I'm always looking for healthy options to offer them. Like meat, high quality snack items can really add up fast. Walmart has also done a great job of incorporating cleaner, healthier snack items into their stores. Other snack items I buy often that aren't pictured here are Terra Sweet Potato chips, organic tortilla chips for the kids to dip in salsa or guacamole, and high protein bean based chips like Beanitos.
Can do condiments!
You can feel good about loading up on healthy sauces and condiments when they're well priced. Walmart offers many organic and gluten-free sauces, spreads, and condiments that aren't full of creepy ingredients.
Affordable dairy and awesome extras
Organic dairy is something else I tend to spend money on. Walmart offers a great selection of organic milks, cheese, and yogurt. As an added bonus, these items often go on sale. When things like organic cheese go on sale (they offer $1 deals for organic cheese!) I tend to stock up and keep the extras in the freezer. Cheese freezes great so it's a nice way to enjoy the budget friendly bonus.
We are a gluten-free family, and I really appreciate the gluten-free offerings Walmart has made available. They have a huge selection of gluten-free foods for the lowest prices around. I love Schar brand - I've mentioned before that their gluten-free multigrain bread (not pictured) is hands down the best gluten-free bread on the market. I'm always sure to stock up on it when I do my Walmart shopping.
