"For my people have forsaken me, the spring of living water. And they have dug wells, broken wells that can’t hold water." - Jeremiah 2:13
A few weeks ago, Sean got the flu just days after returning home from a business trip. He was so sick that he was in bed for 7 full days. The time he was gone on his trip, combined with his sickness, made for two very long weeks of being a solo parent and handling everything in the household alone. After many days of him being sick, I was feeling weary, like I was pouring out of an empty cup, and I cried out to Jesus for strength.
As I found myself overwhelmed by the responsibilities of solo parenting and caring for my sick husband, I couldn't help but think about the weight of all that had piled on me. Day after day, I was pouring myself out, trying to hold it all together, yet feeling so empty. I cried out to Jesus for strength, asking for the living water that only He can provide. It was in that raw moment, amidst the exhaustion and tears, that I was reminded of a powerful truth: the living water Jesus offers is the only thing that can truly satisfy the thirst in my soul.
This idea of thirsting for something that can never truly quench us isn't new. In fact, it goes all the way back to the time of the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was just a young man when he received his calling to speak God’s words to the people of Israel. God’s message to them was clear: they had forsaken Him, the true spring of living water, and had turned to empty idols instead. In Jeremiah 2:13, God laments, "They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
What a powerful image! A cistern, which was meant to hold water, but is broken, leaking, and unable to provide anything of value. That’s what the people of Israel were doing—they were turning to things that couldn’t fill them up, couldn’t satisfy their needs. And if we’re honest, don’t we do the same?
It’s so easy to dig our own cisterns, thinking that things like material wealth, success, relationships, or even our kids and spouses will fulfill us. But when we rely on anything other than God for our peace, purpose, and satisfaction, we are only left with broken cisterns that can’t hold what we truly need.
A broken cistern has sprung a leak and can’t hold water. God is saying, 'If you go out there to the world and drink from that well, it is not going to satisfy you.'" How often do we search for fulfillment in the wrong places, only to find ourselves feeling more parched than before?
I know I’ve been guilty of this, especially in the midst of life's challenges. It’s easy to scroll on social media at the end of a long day, or turn on a show or movie and "zone out". How easy it is to focus on things that feel like they should fill the void. But when I place my trust in the temporary things of this world, I always end up feeling more empty, more worn out. I needed to remember what God had promised—the spring of living water that never runs dry.
God’s invitation is clear: He is the only source that can truly fill us. He is the only one who can quench our thirst. Jeremiah 1:19 reminds us, "I am with you and will rescue you, declares the Lord." Even in moments of exhaustion, heartache, and uncertainty, God is with us, offering His mercy, grace, and strength to help us persevere.
When we turn away from the broken cisterns of this world and turn to Jesus, the Living Water, He promises to refresh our souls. In John 4:13-14, Jesus tells us, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” This is the water that doesn’t just temporarily satisfy—it fills us, restores us, and renews us from the inside out.
In the midst of life’s trials and moments when we feel like we’re pouring out of an empty cup, Jesus is there, calling us to drink deeply from the only source that will truly sustain us. His offer is not just a whisper, but a loud call: "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink" (John 7:37-38).
So, where are you drinking from today? Are you drinking from broken cisterns, or are you coming to the Living Water that will never run dry?
As we lean into God's promises, we find the strength, peace, and fulfillment that our souls long for. The invitation is open to all of us, no matter where we are in life. If you’re feeling weary, like I was, remember that Jesus is there, ready to fill you up with His grace, strength, and the living water that will never leave you thirsty again.
