“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”- Philippians 4:8
I don't know about you, but one of the areas I am always looking to improve is my thought life.
When we fill our minds with what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy, our thoughts begin to take shape—and eventually, they shape us. Over time, right thinking becomes our natural rhythm. What we believe truly is what we become.
Even science confirms what Scripture has always said—our thoughts impact us on every level, even physically. Isn’t it amazing when science catches up with God’s Word?
Paul wrote these words while imprisoned in Rome, yet his heart was full of joy. His perspective wasn’t tied to his circumstances, but to Christ. The secret to his peace and strength was a mind fixed on truth.
Here’s the blueprint Paul gives for godly thinking:
- True: Let God’s Word be your foundation. When lies creep in, anchor to His truth.
- Honest: Walk in integrity and sincerity in a world that often values appearance over authenticity.
- Just: Seek righteousness and fairness, reflecting God’s justice in your everyday choices.
- Pure: Keep your heart and mind clean by focusing on what honors God.
- Lovely: Notice the beauty of God’s goodness—in creation, in people, and in small acts of kindness.
- Good Report: Dwell on stories of hope and God’s faithfulness instead of negativity.
- Virtue and Praise: Fill your heart with gratitude and let praise overflow in every season.
As we close out this year, let’s guard our thoughts carefully—what we read, watch, and listen to—and choose to dwell on what is good. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can think like Paul and have the same mind as Christ.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your Word that renews and restores my mind. Help me recognize thoughts that don’t align with Your truth, and give me strength to turn from them. Let my thoughts bring You honor, my heart reflect Your peace, and my life overflow with praise. Amen.
