Today I turn 40. It’s surreal to say it out loud. I can still remember the girl in her twenties who thought 40 was so far away. And now, here I am with more experience, more wisdom, and a heart that’s been both broken and healed in the presence of God.
If I could go back and tell my younger self a few things, here’s what I’d say:
1. Keep Everything in Proper Priority—Stay Within God’s Grace
Don’t let busyness rearrange what matters most. Keep God first, and everything else falls into place. His grace is not just a concept; it’s the strength you’ll need daily.
2. Time Is Precious
You will never get this day back. Use it wisely. Spend it with people you love, doing things that matter, and investing in eternity.
3. Limit Distractions
There are more distractions as time goes on. Set boundaries and be present.
4. Get to Know the Holy Spirit Personally
He’s not just a part of a distant theology—He’s your helper, counselor, comforter, and friend. He wants to speak to you and walk with you daily.
5. Fear and Anxiety Will Drain You
Instead of worrying or fretting, take everything to Jesus in prayer, and trust His promises. His love will cover you and carry you through your life if you let Him.
6. Care for Your Body Like the Gift It Is
Instead of working out and eating to change the way our bodies look, realize what a gift they are and for them with longevity in mind. Nourish. Move. Honor the gift God has given you, so you can live the full length of your days to the fullest!
7. Family and Friends Are Priceless
Invest deeply in relationships. At the end of your life, it won’t be the achievements, status, or stuff that will matter. It will be the people you love.
8. Trust God, Even When It’s Hard
His promises never fail. When circumstances lie, His Word still stands. Seek Him with all your heart—and watch Him be faithful.
9. Obey Quickly
Delayed obedience is often disobedience in disguise. When God speaks, move. Even when it’s hard. Even when it doesn’t make sense.
10. Live With Legacy in Mind
None of us are promised tomorrow. How do you want to be remembered? Live today with eternity in your sights.
No matter what season of life you are in, I pray these lessons I have learned are a reminder to live your best life starting today! xo Katie
