"Blessed [joyful, nourished by God's goodness] are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness [those who actively seek right standing with God], for they will be [completely] satisfied." Matthew 5:6
"Sarah, what are you hungry for?" I was in prayer this week when I heard that unexpected question echoing deep inside my spirit. I'd been feeling restless for days. There was an anxiousness in my heart that I couldn't put my finger on. I sought the Lord for understanding. As I did, He revealed an answer I hadn't anticipated but should have. I should have seen the unsettled storm building. As I prayed, I heard the Holy Spirit once again whisper, "What are you hungry for?" I instantly understood as the words resonated in my starving soul. For weeks, I've gotten by on very little spiritual nutrition. A host of circumstances (ahem, I'm looking at you our new puppy, Megan) have kept me from adequately filling up on the Word of God in the wee hours of the morning. My morning time in the Bible is a filling I desperately need. We all do. I've been sustained by mere bits, crumbs, versus a satisfying fill of the Word. It's not enough, and without sufficiently nourishing our soul, we become malnourished, starving! We are prone to accept counterfeit substitutes in such a state—precisely the case with my restless heart. Yes, I was hungry for righteousness, but I was settling for apathy. I was parched and famished for the one true bread of life that fills, but out of weariness, or maybe even indifference, sought a quick fix of social media, a few unnecessary purchases, and an extra cup of joe. No wonder. No wonder I couldn't hold my peace. There is only one way to be completely satisfied, and it comes from nothing this world has to offer.
So, I ask you, what are you hungry for? Approval? Instant gratification? Money? Weight loss? They may give you a sweet taste for a moment, but they will leave you empty. They may give you a momentary rush but will end in a crash and burn. Sisters, there is only one source for complete satisfaction, and that is the Word of God. If, like me, you find yourself in desperate need of God's blessed, joyful, nourishing goodness, run, don't walk into His presence, and be filled. May you enjoy a full day! God bless you.
