"For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do." Galatians 5:17
Carpe Diam! Seize the day! To each his own! Life is short, do what makes you happy!
Sound familiar? It should. These are the messages for which the world unapologetically advocates. Ours is not a culture that encourages denying the flesh to benefit long-term gain in the spirit. Fleeting satisfaction will always be the bent of the flesh, and on this side of heaven, the flesh will always war with the spirit.
So, what's that leave a Jesus-minded gal like us to do? Simple. Seize the Lord. Renew your mind rigorously with God's word that cuts straight through that stubborn flesh and strengthens the spirit. The flesh will say, "Go ahead, eat that you'll feel better! You deserve it." The flesh will deny good sense and tell you, "Girl, you buy those shoes you can't afford. Life is short." The flesh will always seek satisfaction over sanctification. But the Bible tells us that kind of living is folly.
Examine your life today. Are there areas where you are living for the moment in exchange for lasting benefit? Are there habits you need to rearrange to line up with more kingdom-minded living? Invite Jesus into those struggles and watch as self-control, endurance, and peace have their perfect result by the work of the Spirit. Simply ask the Lord. He will do the heavy lifting. He is so good. Have an eternally-minded, Kingdom-oriented day.
