"Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and He will help you." Psalm 37:5
Carpe diam! Seize the day! We've all heard the saying. I don't know about you, though, but this mindset has tripped me up time and time again when it comes to healthy eating and exercise. You know the scenario. It's a new day. "I'm going to exercise and eat according to my hunger and plan today," you enthusiastically tell yourself. Intentionality, that's the name of the game for you today. That's good! Really good. Going into the day with intentionality is wise. Where do I wrestle with the saying? Let’s say you're going about a great day when bam. Life hits you with a curveball. Your kid wakes up with a fever and clings to all day like dog hair to corduroy – workout is history. You got invited to lunch with friends and the lure of bottomless chips and salsa was too strong, you caved – planned eating diverted. You found out the "minor" car repair is going to cost you and your legit stress led you straight to the quart of moose tracks ice cream – sayonara intuitive eating. We'll try again tomorrow.
Stop the film right there. This is precisely the problem with seizing the day mentality. So many of us allow one minor hiccup or deviation to hijack our entire day. How many times have you eaten something unplanned or gone a bit overboard and let that one moment derail your whole day? I know I have! That's why, instead, I prefer carpe momentum – seize the moment. Long-term health is made of moments. Minute-to-minute decisions are a big deal when it comes to victorious living. In my opinion, there are always one of two scenarios:
- Your thoughts direct your actions
- Your actions direct your thoughts
I do believe it's that simple. When you encounter the unexpected, instead of considering the day, try viewing the day in light of moments. One choice does not dictate another. You have a choice. You can seize the very next moment to pivot your way of thinking and, as a result, direct your actions, or you can allow one choice to rob you of an otherwise successful day. Today, start by getting your mind right so that your thoughts direct your actions. Remember, you have NO obligation whatsoever to do what your flesh urges you to do. You have the power of the Holy Spirit, which guides you toward good, and He will help you. Take your life to Him moment by moment today as you walk it out with intentionality.
