"Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, Your wine vats will brim over." Proverbs 3:8-9
Do you ever pause to take inventory of how you spend your time, your energy, your giftings, your finances? Simply giving attention to what, or to whom we devote our first and best is important. Ask yourself, who or what gets the first of my finances? Who or what gets the best of my time and energy? Who or what do I spend the most time thinking, reading, or talking about?
The truth is, simply evaluating how we spend our literal and figurative firstfruits reveals important information about our priorities and, often the condition of our hearts. How much time do you spend reading God's Word compared to the amount of time you spend on your phone? How much time do you spend in prayer versus talking about and rehearsing your challenges and worries? Does God get the first and best of your finances or the leftovers?
Evaluating your priorities should not to be met with shame or condemnation. In fact, the very opposite is the goal of this intentional assessment. The goal is to honor God from a place of love and reverence. The goal is to come before Him honestly with a heartfelt desire to reorder things in a way that presents to Him your very best life's offering. Not only does this honor God, but there is also a very real "self-serving" reward He offers us as a result. When we serve God, we enjoy the benefits ourselves. He promises that with our sacrifice comes a blessing.
When we give from little He makes much. When we make a sacrificial offering He in return causes our lives to overflow with every gift under heaven. If you haven't recently, can I encourage you to take time today to invite Jesus into your priorities and allow Him to reorder, rearrange, and recover areas of your life that He can make flourish when you honor Him? I pray your life bursts and brims over with His goodness as you do. God bless you.
