“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved." 1 Corinthians 10:30-33
I'll never forget the first time I ate a meal for God, not for other people. I used to dread eating in front of other people. It was almost theatrical for me. Very much for show. I was so self-aware that I would choose foods or quantities of foods that I believed supported other people's expectations of me. There was so much wrong with it. For one, that much self-awareness is flirting with unhealthy psychology at the least, idolatry at the worst. It bred years of binge and sneak eating. And, it had at its core the absolute pursuit of approval of others, not God. My healing journey to food freedom had a lot of heartbreak leading the way. It truly was the broken-heartedness though that helped set me free. Coming to a point of deep repentance over my disordered eating was the difference from all other attempts at freedom in the past. In the coming weeks and months, there will be a myriad of plans and products enticing you to believe they are finally the answer to your desire for food freedom. Will you allow me to be a voice of reason that rises above them all and promise you that they provide empty promises? There is only one motivation for health and food freedom that will endure. If you purpose in your heart to please God with your choices above all else, you have finally discovered the path to true freedom. While everyone else is searching for that magic pill and fast fix plan, will you set out in search of the glory of God? It's the one true answer and will never leave you empty.
