The Book of Psalms is the Bible's hymnbook. It will show you what it means to walk with God in prayer and praise. - Billy Graham
Do you desire a rich prayer life but aren't sure how to start? Do you find yourself kneeling before the Lord, reaching for the "right" words to pray? Do you long to feel confident that your prayers line up with the heart and will of God?
If you said yes, prepare to be blessed. The solution to powerfully reaching the very ear of God is within His word. Anyone can pray the Psalms for a prayer life that is powerful and effective. Here's how I use the Psalms as my prayer guide.
Read the Psalm
I recommend reading a Psalm every day as part of your time with the Lord. They are filled with encouragement, wisdom, empathy, assurance, and every sort of human emotion. Begin by reading a psalm you choose (or feel led to read). Read it out loud if possible. Then, reread it. I also like to read the psalm in different translations.
Reflect on the Psalm
After you've thoroughly and slowly read the psalm at least a couple of times, pause and allow the Lord to renew your mind by His word, reflect (meditate) on what you've just read. Ask the Lord to point out anything He has for you in it. Reflect on how it might apply to a current life situation or decision you or someone you know is navigating. Allow the Lord to illuminate the Psalm by His spirit.
Write the Psalm
Now, turn the psalm into your prayer. Personalize the words of the psalm to connect with God through prayer. Here is an example of how I prayed Psalm 121 today.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Lord, you are great and mighty. You made the earth and everything in it. Thank you for being my source of strength today. Thank you that you never sleep. You never take your eyes off my family and me. Thank you, Lord, for watching over us and guarding us against all harm both day and night. I remind you of your promise this day to watch over my family and my life to protect and preserve us, to go ahead of us as we go about our day. You are Lord over our lives today and always. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
There is a psalm for every season. May the God of peace and power move mightily in you and through you as you pray His word today.
